The blog is dedicated (as very obvious from the name) to the art style of the inter-war years (1910-1939).
The elegant style that came to be known as Art Deco epitomized luxury and fashion of the Jazz age. Deco effect could be seen in the skylines of New York to Shanghai. The designs of fashionable costumes to mass-produced radios were all altered by it. From fine arts, architecture and interior design, to fashion and textiles, film and photography all adopted this new no-nonsense chic style.
Essentially an eclectic style originated as a one-off masterwork to limited edition pieces, it drew inspirations from the historic western high styles, the vernacular traditions, the exotic non-western traditions, and cultures of far distant past and contemporary avant-garde art. With time Art deco became synonymous with mass-consumption and modernity. Art Deco after all these years is experiencing a come back in a big way.
As part of the final diploma project in the National Institute Of Design (Furniture and Interior Design) I'm required to deal with this style, modernize it and come up with a furniture collection suited to the current times. To be capable of doing so I need to understand this many faceted style and the factors related to have shaped it. This blog is hence a record of my everyday learning.
Information in any forms, online, addresses, links and comments on the posts that follow in the coming days will be very helpful for me too understand ART DECO.
Looking forward for a good participation and a great discussion.
